Soccer Player Dies in Scotland

Phil O'Donnell, a 35-year-old midfielder for Motherwell, fell to the ground at Fir Park and was carried off on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Motherwell said its medical staff and that of Dundee United believed O'Donnell had a seizure, but did not elaborate. Club chairman Bill Dickie said there will be an autopsy.

"This is an unspeakable tragedy for Phil's family," Motherwell owner John Boyle said in a statement. "Everyone at Motherwell is shocked to the core and we are sure that everyone involved in Scottish football will feel the same.

"Phil was not only an inspirational player for Motherwell and club captain, but was an inspirational person. All of us at Motherwell are thinking of his wife, Eileen, and their four children."

O'Donnell collapsed before he could be replaced by substitute Marc Fitzpatrick. He was treated on the field for about five minutes and Fitzpatrick entered in the 78th minute.

O'Donnell's nephew David Clarkson, who had scored twice for Motherwell, was substituted a few moments later because he was upset by what happened.

Saturday's game was played to completion, the teams apparently unaware of O'Donnell's condition. Motherwell won 5-3.

"I don't want to say anything more than how devastated everyone at the club is for his wife and his young children," Motherwell manager Mark McGhee said. "That's what we are all feeling tonight. Nothing else matters."

O'Donnell started his career at Motherwell before stints with Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday. He also played once for Scotland, entering as substitute in a World Cup qualifier against Switzerland in 1993. He scored for Motherwell in its 4-3 victory over Dundee United in the 1991 Scottish Cup final.

Former Scotland manager Craig Brown gave O'Donnell his only international appearance.

"I think everyone in the game will acknowledge what a wonderful player he was and an outstanding gentleman," Brown told Sky Sports News. "And I would expect to have a minute's applause at every ground in Scotland at the next fixture."

O'Donnell's death recalled that of Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe, who collapsed and died at the 2003 Confederations Cup in France. That prompted soccer's ruling body to demand a general physical and thorough cardiovascular tests on all players leading to last year's World Cup in Germany.

This past summer, Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta died after he collapsed on the field during a Spanish league game. He had a weak right ventricle, and his death was one of at least three in soccer in August.

Striker Chaswe Nsofwa died of heart failure while training in Israel. A player for the English team Walsall, 16-year-old Anton Reid, died after collapsing while training.

Fewer businesses are now planning to move to Windows Vista than seven months ago, according to a survey by patch management vendor PatchLink Corp., while more said they will either stick with the Windows they have, or turn to Linux or Mac OS X.

In a just-released poll of more than 250 of its clients, PatchLink noted that only 2% said they are already running Vista, while another 9% said they planned to roll out Vista in the next three months. A landslide majority, 87%, said they would stay with their existing version(s) of Windows.

Those numbers contrasted with a similar survey the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based vendor published in December 2006. At the time, 43% said they had plans to move to Vista, while just 53% planned to keep what Windows they had.

Today's hesitation also runs counter to what companies thought they would do as of late last year. In PatchLink's December poll, 28% said they would deploy Vista within the first year of its release. But by the results of the latest survey, fewer than half as many -- just 11% -- will have opted for the next-generation operating system by Nov. 1.

Their change of heart may be because of a changed perception of Vista's security skills. Seven months ago -- within weeks of Vista's official launch to business, but before the operating system started selling in retail -- 50% of the CIOs, CSOs, IT and network administrators surveyed by PatchLink said they believe Vista to be more secure than Windows XP. The poll put the security-skeptical at 15% and pegged those who weren't sure yet at 35%.

Today, said PatchLink, only 28% agreed that Vista is more secure than XP. Meanwhile, the no votes increased to 24% and the unsure climbed to 49%.

Reconsiderations about Vista have given rival operating systems a second chance at breaking into corporations. Last year, Linux and Max OS X had only meager appeal to the CIOs, CSOs, IT and network administrators surveyed: 2% said they planned to deploy the open-source Linux, while none owned up to Mac OS X plans. July's survey, however, noted a sixfold increase in the total willing to do without Windows on at least some systems: 8% of those polled acknowledged Linux plans, and 4% said they would deploy Mac OS X.

PatchLink's survey results fit with research firms' continued forecasts that corporate deployment of Vista won't seriously begin until early next year.

Computers have a tendency to go wrong from time to time, these days total hard drive failure is rare but it does happen.

One of the more common problems nowadays is the threat from viruses, with some of the more serious infecting the master boot record of a hard drive's file system. If the master boot record is infected with a virus then the Fdisk utility would most likely have to be run and the chances are the data on the drive would be lost (or at least difficult to recover).

Operating system failure and bad software installation are other things that can cause problems when it comes to recovering files.

How frequently you back up will depend on how often you use your PC and what you use it for.

The average home user will probably just have to back up any important files as and when they are changed and do a full back-up once a week/month (depending on PC use).

When PCs are used in a home office scenario then backing up should be done more frequently.

One rule of thumb would be if your important files change daily, back-up daily,
if they change weekly, back-up weekly, and so on.
